Guide to Common Winter Sports Injuries with Our Chiropractor

winter activity

Snow and ice shouldn’t prevent you from being active, but winter can increase the risk of injuries. In this guide, our team at Spine Pain Center in Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville, Surfside Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Irmo, Columbia, SC, discuss the most common winter sports injuries that chiropractic care can address.

Dislocations

Winter sports involve playing on less-than-favorable surfaces that are easy to fall on. When those falls occur, it’s no surprise that joints can become dislocated. Shoulders are the most common target for dislocations in winter sports.

Concussions

Those same falls can lead to concussions, which tend to increase with winter sports. Falls aren’t the only cause, though. For example, many skiers fall from lift towers or chairs and collide with trees or other objects.

Knee Injuries

Approximately one-third of winter sports injuries fall into the knee injury category. The most common knee injury is spraining the medial collateral ligament (MCL) or rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In addition, many winter athletes use supportive braces and more for their shins and ankles, leaving stress and force on the knee. Be sure to support your knees as much as you support everything else.

Wrist Injuries

Wrist fractures are another common winter sports injury. The leading cause is athletes trying to brace themselves when they fall. Although, this puts too much pressure on the wrist, leading to fractures and sprains.
