What Is a Bulging Disc?

In between the bones of the spine are discs that cushion those bones and absorb shock. Unfortunately, those discs can be impacted by many things, including poor posture, pregnancy, being overweight, car accidents, and more. Such activities can cause the disc to protrude outside of its rightful placement, causing what is known as a bulging disc.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bulging Disc?

Depending on where the disc has bulged and how far it has protruded, there is a chance that you may not feel any symptoms. However, many suffer from muscle spasms, shooting back pain, chronic pain in the lower back, tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Is a Bulging Disc the Same as a Herniated Disc?

Though they are similar, bulging and herniated discs are two different things. A bulging disc is when the disc itself bulges outward. A herniated disc is when there is a tear in the outer casing of the disc, which causes the inner filling to spill out. They can create similar symptoms, including lower back pain, chronic pain, and tingling. And, when not addressed, a bulging disc can eventually herniate.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat a Bulging Disc?

Spinal decompression therapy is one of the most effective forms of treatment. With this method, the spine is gently stretched, which pulls the bulging disc back into its rightful place. It also draws nutrients to the disc to not only heal it but also plump it back up into its normal shape.

In addition to spinal decompression therapy, both adjustments and therapeutic exercises are used as bulging disc treatments. Adjustments help restore proper alignment of the spine, which helps target the cause of the bulging disc. Therapeutic exercises are used to help your spine stay in proper alignment.
